DEAR PRESIDENT OBAMA: The unprecedented "Anti-Homosexuality Bill" being considered by Uganda's parliament would make homosexuality a crime punishable by death in some instances and by life imprisonment in many others.
We urge you and your administration to use all diplomatic and economic means necessary — including the revocation of Uganda's special trade beneficiary status under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (what's this?) — to compel the Ugandan government to unequivocally reject the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. The U.S. cannot sit by as Ugandan politicians attempt to enact a law that would violate international human rights and put Uganda's LGBT community on a path towards genocide.
If ever there was a time for the full force and power of the Presidency, this is it.
The lives of Uganda's LGBT citizens are — all too literally — hanging in the balance.
Your forthright leadership is needed now.
President Obama, we are waiting.
